Thornton brings soul of a writer to secretary position

Maris Thornton is a senior majoring in Communication Studies and is specializing in Public Relations and is so happy for their position as secretary of PRSSA. They join the society to get a better understanding of the kind of work they could be doing in the PR field. Also joining to get to know other PR majors/students interested in Public Relations.

“PRSSA has made me feel more a part of the school’s community,” Thornton said.

In the position of secretary, Maris is responsible for taking attendance and is to be a point of contact for clients and other members of the society. Also, they are responsible for leading a group with our Public Relations Director Ashlyn Ege. They relay information to their group about what work their client wants from them.

“Maris overall has a great mind and soul. They contribute so much to our group and always has a great attitude. I really appreciate the commitment and drive they have. I’m excited to be leading a group with them this semester,” Ashlyn Ege said.

Maris is involved in a lot of things outside of school. Their favorite book is Black Leopard, Red Wolf and loves the show Top Chef.

“In my free time I enjoy writing fiction novels and short stories,” Thornton said.

Maris really enjoys going to school at this University but also loves Carbondale. They love Carbondale because of the hiking trails, especially Giant City and Little Grand Canyon.

“Fun fact about me is I love biking. The bike paths and lanes in town make it super convenient to run errands or visit nearby trails,” Thornton said.

When Maris graduates, they would love to do Public Relations work for a nonprofit. When they took a gap year, they worked for a Planned Parenthood Clinic which inspired them to return to the school and study Communications. Now they are achieving all expectations and are working so hard in this Society to expand their knowledge in Communications.

We are extremely grateful to be working with Maris. Every day we are shown through their actions and work ethic how they are so deserving of this position.
